Police have confirmed one person has died following a reported stabbing at a restaurant on Auckland’s North Shore this afternoon.

Emergency services responded to reports of an assault at a premises in Browns Bay at 5.48pm.

Hato Hone St John sent two ambulances and one rapid response vehicle to the scene on Clyde Rd.

The victim of the assault was transported to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries.

The offender responsible for inflicting the serious injuries died at the scene from a “self-inflicted injury”, police said.

“The victim and the offender were known to each other.

“Police are providing support to those affected by this traumatic incident.”

No one else is being sought, police said.

A witness to the aftermath of the stabbing earlier told 1News the scene was “quite horrific”.

“A person was lying on the path and a bystander was holding the door of the sushi shop closed to keep the offender inside.”

She said a police car arrived and three or four police officers approached the door.

“One was armed with a taser.”

Moments after, more police showed up with guns, she said.

Parts of the scene appear to be cordoned off and there is a large police presence in the area.

An Auckland Transport spokesperson said an emergency incident is causing delays and detours on 83, 856, 865 and 878 bus services.
