A 22-year-old will appear in court today after allegedly being caught with cocaine while he was breaking into a vehicle in South Auckland last week.

Police responded to reports of a man seen to be breaking into a vehicle on Brightwell St, Papakura, at around 8am on Friday.

Inspector Joe Hunter said a unit was quickly on the scene, where he was allegedly trying further car doors.

“The man was located a short time later walking on Clevedon Rd where he was arrested.”

Police also located what appeared to be cocaine on the man during the arrest.

“I would like to acknowledge the community’s vigilance in reporting this suspicious activity to us, so we can respond,” Hunter said.

The man is due to appear in the Papakura District Court today charged with three counts of unlawful interference of a vehicle and possession for supply of cocaine.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Amendment Act 1975, cocaine can be presumed to be for supply if it is at or over half a gram.

This is whether or not the cocaine is contained in a substance, preparation or mixture.
