We’ve tapped three of Ōtautahi’s most stylish locals to share their favourite spots for shopping, dining, coffee and everything in between.
Whether you’re heading to Christchurch for the Spring Fashion Festival or making a weekend of it, who better to show you around than those who know the city best? From standout places to shop, dine and grab a coffee to hidden gems, local hot spots and must-visit locations, discover the places worth adding to your itinerary.
And it turns out they’re just as excited for CSFF as we are. Tuscany Hamel, hairstylist and founder of haircare brand Hair Candy, says she “loves the energy that fashion week brings to a city, it encourages people to really embrace fashion, creativity and their own personal style.”
With a busy few days ahead in the Garden City, consider this your insider’s guide to experiencing Christchurch in style – no risk of FOMO here!
Where to Shop
As a stylist and fashion design graduate, Skye Zöfia Marryatt knows where to find the city’s best shopping. “Definitely head to The Crossing for its mix of fashion and independent stores, while The Tannery is great for something a little more unexpected, with plenty of local businesses and unique pieces to discover.”
Where to Dine
Sophie Stephens, aka Soph Eats Out on Instagram, is the ultimate foodie and always on the hunt for great places to eat. “It’s hard to pick just one! Odeon is a favourite for a fun dinner in the city. The food is delicious, and the menu is a little more unique – perfect if you’re looking to try something different.”
If you’re extending your trip through to Tuesday, she also recommends Mexicanos. “It’s my favourite for a Tuesday 2 for 1 tacos and I always get a spicy pineapple marg (trust me, it’s delicious).”

Where to Stay
If you want to be right in the heart of the city, Tuscany’s pick is Elysian Du Regent, a boutique Airbnb on New Regent Street. “It feels like stepping into a little European apartment, surrounded by beautiful cafés and restaurants and within walking distance of the city centre and The Crossing.”
For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle, Skye would head to Tussock Hill. “It’s a beautiful, rustic winery in the Port Hills, with a vineyard, cellar door and gorgeous little retreat. You feel tucked away from everything – almost like you’re not in Christchurch at all – yet you’re still close to town, with amazing views.”

Where to Grab Coffee
For Skye, Child Sister is her go-to coffee spot. “I also love that they have such a good selection of food with plenty of options for different dietary needs,” she says. But if matcha is more your thing, Sophie picks up a Mr. Robs matcha latte from Ballantynes or New World to sip on while walking around Hagley Park.

What to Do
A visit to Ravenscar House Museum and Art Gallery is high on Tuscany’s list, followed by a stroll through the Botanic Gardens. “Especially in spring when everything is in bloom. It’s such a lovely way to experience Christchurch.”
If you’ve got a little more time to explore, Sophie says you can’t look past Akaroa. “It’s genuinely one of my favourite places in the world. The drive out is beautiful, and it’s the perfect little day trip to spend some time by the ocean, with plenty of lovely cafés and wineries to stop at along the way.”

Hidden Gem
Vesuvio is Tuscany’s top spot for a drink. “It’s tucked away around Carlton Corner, so you really have to hunt it out – that’s part of the charm. It’s cool and low-key, but has such an incredible atmosphere.” And Skye’s not one to gate keep, either. “Kisi Bar is one of my favourite spots for a wine or martini with friends – definitely too good not to share.”
