Twenty years is a significant milestone for any independent jewellery brand, and Meadowlark is marking the occasion by looking to its own archives.

Launching on 23 July, the Auckland jewellery label’s new Locks collection revisits one of its most recognisable motifs, reinterpreting the humble padlock as a refined, contemporary talisman. Originally introduced in 2017 as part of Meadowlark’s Liberty collection, the design returns with softer lines, elevated finishes and a renewed sense of purpose.

For founders Claire Hammon and Greg Fromont, the collection reflects more than nostalgia. It celebrates two decades of creating jewellery in Aotearoa while exploring the emotional significance that has long defined the Meadowlark aesthetic.

The padlock has traditionally symbolised protection, permanence and devotion. In Locks, those ideas are expanded to explore the duality between romance and strength, qualities that often exist side by side. Delicate yet resilient, sentimental yet understated, each piece is designed to become a modern heirloom that carries personal meaning for its wearer.

It’s an approach that feels particularly relevant at a time when consumers continue to gravitate towards jewellery with longevity over fleeting trends. Rather than statement pieces worn for a single season, there’s growing appreciation for designs that become part of everyday life, collecting memories and significance over time.

The collection includes necklaces, earrings and rings, each centred around the sculptural lock motif. Select designs can also be personalised through engraving, allowing customers to add initials or a meaningful stone to create a piece that feels uniquely their own.

Versatility is another defining feature. The lock can be worn suspended from a fine chain, styled as a bold earring or incorporated into a considered ring stack, encouraging wearers to interpret the collection in their own way.

While many brands celebrate anniversaries by looking forward, Meadowlark’s decision to revisit one of its own signatures feels fitting. The brand has spent the past two decades building a loyal following through thoughtful design, craftsmanship and jewellery that carries emotional weight rather than simply decorative appeal.

By returning to an archival design and refining it for today, Meadowlark acknowledges its history without becoming constrained by it. The result is a collection that feels both familiar and fresh, one that honours where the brand has come from while pointing confidently towards its next chapter.

The Locks collection launches on Thursday, 23 July, and will be available from meadowlark.co.nz and selected Meadowlark stockists.
