An Ashburton kite maker is in a race against time as he hopes to set a Guinness World Record for creating the world’s largest kite.
Peter Lynn has been designing and building giant kites since the 1970s, but last year he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Seven of his kites have been recognised as the biggest internationally – but now he’s looking for one more world title.
His largest kite measures 1250sqm – and come February next year, he’ll be applying for the Guinness World Record.
And time is of the essence.
Last year, he and his wife Elwyn were diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Elwyn died in January, and Lynn has been told he has around one year left.
“There’s a bit of unfinished business with the time I’ve got left so I’ve gone back to thinking ‘well, I better do that now ’cause I’m not going to be able to do it next year’.
“If you want to do something special, persistence beyond reason is necessary, so sticking at something and doing it for a very long time.”
His extensive collection of kites is set to end up at the Ashburton Aviation Museum.
