A man has been charged after a teenager was killed when a car struck a house in northwest Auckland in June.
Elliot New, 16, was a passenger in the vehicle when it hit a house off the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway around 8.20pm on June 27.
The teenager died of his injuries in hospital on July 1.
Three others in the car were also injured and taken to hospital.
Waitematā District Commander Superintendent Naila Hassan said police interviewed the alleged driver of the vehicle today.
“Investigators subsequently charged an 18-year-old man with a range of offences, and he will appear in the North Shore District Court on August 20.”
The 18-year-old man faces seven charges, including dangerous driving causing death and driving under the influence of drugs where death has resulted, following the crash.
He was also charged with one count of failing to stop for flashing red and blue lights.
The crash happened after a vehicle involved failed to stop for officers “a short time earlier”, police alleged.
Earlier, police said the vehicle was not being pursued at the time of the crash. The case has been subject to inquiries by the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA).
Further charges in the case may result from police inquiries, Hassan said.
“A critical incident investigation also remains ongoing, as well as enquiries by the IPCA,” she said.
“We are continuing to support our people through the process, as well as to the families that have been impacted by the tragic events that Friday night.”
