A man has been charged after a person died following an incident at a lodge in Auckland’s Ōtāhuhu on Sunday night.

Emergency services were called to the Beatty Lodge Accommodation on the corner of Beatty St and Great South Rd at around 8.30pm after reports that a person had been seriously injured.

A man was found in a critical condition and was rushed to hospital. He later died of his injuries.

A man was taken into custody yesterday.

This morning, Detective Inspector Karen Bright said a 31-year-old man was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and would appear in Manukau District Court today.

“This is a great result and police haven’t ruled out the possibility of further charges,” Bright said.

Police said yesterday that those involved were believed to be known to each other, and there was no ongoing risk to the wider community.

One man, who said he had lived at the lodge for 11 years, told 1News the man who died was a new tenant and there had been a “lot of fights” recently.

“Many times the police come around here,” he said.

Bright said the investigation remained ongoing, and thanked those who had already come forward to assist police.
