A person has been taken into custody following the death of a man after an incident at a lodge in Auckland’s Ōtāhuhu last night.

Emergency services were called to a property on Beatty St at about 8.30pm on Sunday following a report of a person being seriously injured.

Detective Inspector Karen Bright said police found a man in a critical condition on arrival.

Hato Hone St John said it responded with one ambulance, one raid response vehicle, and one manager.

“One patient was assessed at the scene and transported to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition.”

Police confirmed the man died of his injuries overnight. 1News understands the man was found at Beatty Lodge Accommodation on the corner of Beatty St and Great South Rd.

“Police are continuing to gather information from the scene and enquiries into the exact circumstances surrounding what happened remain ongoing,” Bright said.

“Those involved are believed to be known to each other and we do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the wider community.”

In an update this afternoon, Bright said police took a 31-year-old man into custody this afternoon.

“We are currently speaking to the 31-year-old as part of our enquiries,” she said.

“This is positive progress in our investigation and at this point we are not seeking anyone else.”

Police said charging decisions are expected tomorrow morning.

“Other aspects of our enquiry will continue, with a scene examination and a post-mortem examination to be carried out.”

One man, who said he had lived at the lodge for 11 years, told 1News the man who died was a new tenant and there had been a “lot of fights” recently.

“Many times the police come around here,” he said.

Bright said earlier today that a scene examination was underway at the address and there would be an increased police presence as the investigation continued.

“Our teams are working hard to identify and locate the person responsible and are asking anyone who saw what happened, who has not yet spoken to us, to please get in touch.”

Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105.
