A person was airlifted to Hospital from Waiheke Island in a “serious condition” after they jumped overboard from a ferry to Auckland this morning.

The incident occurred on a Fullers360 ferry at around 7am. A spokesperson said the passenger had jumped overboard.

“Our crew immediately initiated standard person-overboard procedure, and search-and-rescue operations were launched.

“Thanks to the swift response of our crew in low visibility conditions, the passenger was recovered and brought safely back on board the vessel,” the spokesperson said.

The boat returned to Waiheke, where it met with emergency services to transfer the passenger.

“We extend our gratitude to our crew whose professionalism, prompt reaction and training led to a successful outcome. We would also like to acknowledge the patience of the passengers on board this service,” Fullers360 said.

Hato Hone St John said it was notified of a “water incident” on Ocean View Road, Oneroa, at 07.23am today.

One ambulance and one helicopter responded.

“One patient, in a serious condition, is being airlifted to Auckland City Hospital,” a spokesperson said.

Coastguard confirmed it was aware of the situation.

Police said it was not involved in the rescue, but understood officers had met the ferry and were speaking to those involved.
