“Rain and hot, muggy nights” are in store this weekend says Metservice, but there’s hope for sunny weather back on Monday.
People heading away for Auckland Anniversary weekend might get unlucky with widespread rain and strong northerly winds expected for central and northern parts of the country on Saturday, continuing into Sunday.
“Monday is the day to be out and about for regions observing Auckland Anniversary Day, as the low moves away and skies clear,” said MetService meteorologist Ngaire Wotherspoon.
“A strong southerly flow keeps a lid on temperatures to start, but winds weaken as the day progresses.”
Rain would spread over the South Island from today as a cold front crosses over the island bringing a drop in temperatures.
Lightning was possible for the West Coast and parts of Otago and Canterbury, with tomorrow’s temperatures forecasted to only reach 20C and overnight temperatures in the south to dip to 6C.
“The remnants of the cold front tomorrow will bring a few showers to southern North Island areas, accompanied by a slight dip in temperatures, but conditions further north remain fine and warm before deteriorating this weekend,” said Wotherspoon.
Clear skies are instore for the North Island tonight as temperatures would go to the high 20s with Masterton and Taumarunui forecast for highs of 29C.
“Saturday night will be hot and muggy for the North Island, with overnight lows of 16C to 19C, and Sunday night isn’t looking much cooler.”
West Tasman is set to have the highest rainfall over the weekend and further south rain will be widespread in western regions on Saturday, easing on Sunday.
