Homes have been flooded, roads are blocked, and some are without power in parts of Dunedin as heavy rain continues to hit the Otago region.

A red heavy rain warning was in place for Otago until 11pm tonight. A State of Emergency was declared late last night after yesterday’s deluge.

Locals in low-lying parts of Dunedin were encouraged to evacuate if they felt unsafe because of the flooding.

An evacuation centre has been set up at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
