Hell Pizza and Rewi Spraggon have unveiled a new peeta hāngī, or hāngī pizza, as Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori kicks off this week.

The pizza is called “unearthed” and saw Hell’s Callum Davies join forces with Hāngī Master founder Spraggon – who has made hāngī dumplings and steamed buns in the past.

Spraggon joined Breakfast this morning to give the hosts a chance to try the new pizza.

He said the toppings include pork belly, kumara, a pumpkin and kawakawa puree, and smoky stuffing.

“It’s all gone through the pits, so you get that authentic flavour,” he said.

Spraggon cooked all the ingredients at his Auckland hāngī pits before they were frozen, packed and sent to stores. He did this to ensure the hāngī was as authentic as possible.

“It’s a beautiful, gorgeous pizza,” Spraggon said.

He said that collaborating with a pizza company like Hell makes hāngī “more accessible”.

“This is the oldest dish in New Zealand, and a lot of people don’t get to try proper hāngī tuturu.

“With pizza and hāngī it’s a real sharing thing, it’s a real whānau thing, you can share kai with your whānau.”

The pizza is available from all Hell Pizza stores from Friday.
