An Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Wellington was forced to turn around this morning amid high winds in the capital.
“There are high winds in Wellington which could disrupt some flights,” a spokesperson for the airline said.
“NZ417 has returned to Auckland and customers will be accommodated on the next available service.
“We advise customers to keep an eye on the Air New Zealand app or the arrivals and departures page on our website.”
Flight tracking website flightradar24 showed the plane circled Wellington before heading back to Auckland.
The Air New Zealand website shows a number of other flights arriving into the capital were either delayed or cancelled today.
Multiple departures from Wellington Airport were also affected.
“Strong winds at Wellington Airport have created issues for arriving aircraft.
“So far 10 flights have been cancelled as a result and there may be further disruptions,” an airport spokesperson said at about 1pm.
“Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest information.”
MetService issued a yellow strong wind watch for the capital until 4pm today.
“North to northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
“Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures possible.
“Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
“Prepare your property by securing items that can be picked up by strong winds. Drive cautiously.”
