No road trip? No worries. Here’s how to make the most of a long weekend in Tāmaki Makaurau, according to those who know it best.
Labour weekend often means packing the car, escaping to the bach and getting that first taste of summer. But staying put doesn’t mean missing out. With the right plans, a weekend at home can feel just like a holiday.
We asked four Auckland creatives to share their local favourites, from beachside brunches and rooftop cocktails to stylish workout studios and day trips that feel worlds away. Consider this your guide to playing tourist in your own backyard.
Where to grab brunch:
For a beachside brunch, Elise Marić recommends The Farmers Daughter in Omaha. “It’s minutes from the beach, gorgeous on a sunny day, and the menu showcases the best of local produce.”
Closer to home, Maya Silwood can’t choose between Blue and Ozone. “I love Blue for brunch and drinks, but Ozone is a favourite – their scrambled eggs and sourdough are hard to beat.”

Where to shop:
Newly opened Faradays is top of Rose Kwon’s list for a little retail therapy. “It’s my favourite for discovering beautiful brands in person, especially St. Agni, and the interior is gorgeous, too.” We can see why – the store has an international feel, reminiscent of London’s designer department stores. For a wider mix of shops, Rose recommends heading to Westfield Newmarket.

Where to workout:
For a workout worth getting out of bed for, Maya recommends SALA, known for its mat power Pilates and barre classes. “It’s super spicy, but I’ve managed to get all my friends hooked,” she says. With minimalist interiors and plenty of Insta-worthy spots, the studio looks just as good as the classes feel challenging.
Where to grab coffee:
In a city that takes its coffee seriously, straying from your usual spot can feel risky. Lydia MacNeil swears by Juno and Mother, describing their matcha and coffee as “the most elite”. We’ll take her word for it.
For something to go with your drink, Maya makes weekly visits to Beabea’s with her dog, usually picking up a Marmite and leek scroll. She also rates their pies among the best in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Where to go on a day trip:
When both Elise and Lydia recommend Tāwharanui Peninsula, you listen. Around an hour and a half from the city, its scenic views will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of Auckland life.
Rally your mates, pack a picnic and explore the coastal walking tracks to make a day of it. And if you’re game, throw in your togs – Elise says the beach has some of the best spots for a “cold but rejuvenating” swim.

Where to go for afternoon drinks:
As the day rolls into drinks, we’re all after a spot that looks just as good as the cocktails taste. Lydia’s top picks include Blue on Franklin Road, Sunset Bar and QT Rooftop, each bringing its own unique vibe.
On a sunny day, we think it’s hard to beat Queens Rooftop Bar, where you can soak up the city views with a cocktail in hand. Think indulgent, dessert-inspired tipples, like hokey pokey and apple pie.

Where to dine:
For a destination dining experience, Elise recommends Brick Bay Winery on the Matakana Coast. “The wine is incredible, the menu is fantastic and the location is breathtaking – it’s a real hidden gem.”
Prefer to stay in the city? Rose suggests Den Ramen Bar near K Road for a taste of Japan. “It has such a cosy, homely feel, and I always opt for the miso ramen.”

Where to stay:
If you’re looking to turn your city staycation into a proper escape, Rose recommends an overnight stay at Park Hyatt. “It feels so luxurious, and being right on the waterfront makes it even better. You can wander around Wynyard Quarter and Silo Park, which I love.”
Hidden gem:
With new places popping up weekly, which ones are worthy of hidden-gem status? Maya and her friends are loving newly opened wine bar La Buvette, and she’s already eyeing up a visit to Wilko’s Supper Club, opening this week and tipped to be the next hotspot.
For the ultimate picnic and sunset spot, Lydia says Māori Bay is where it’s at – though she did ask us to gatekeep, so you might want to get there before word gets out!
