A teenager has been arrested and charged with murder following an investigation into the death of 15-year-old Kaea Karauria in Napier earlier this year.

Karauria, 15, was found critically injured at an Alexander Ave address following reports of a disorder event at 3.10am on May 11 and died at the scene despite efforts by ambulance staff.

Police charged and arrested the youth today over the fatal stabbing.

Detective Inspector Dave de Lange said the investigation into the matter would continue and police could not rule out further charges.

“What happened to Kaea was devastating, and police will remain focused on establishing the exact circumstances on what has occurred.

“Kaea deserves justice, and while nothing will undo this terrible act, we hope this arrest can bring a small amount of closure to his family and loved ones.”

De Lange thanked the investigation team for their determination over the past four months as well as members of the public who had provided information that had assisted in the investigation.

“This information has been crucial in allowing us to piece together the tragic events of that night.”

The youth was due to appear in the Napier Youth Court today.

A 21-year-old woman and another teenager had previously been charged with wilfully attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Anyone with relevant information who had not yet contacted police should do so on 105.
