A woman has been airlifted to hospital with moderate injuries after the boat she was on was struck by a wave in the Hauraki Gulf this afternoon.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter, along with the Coastguard, were called to Ponui Island around 4.15pm, a spokesperson for the rescue helicopter trust said. A group of farmers on the island also helped with the rescue.

The woman, believed to be in her 60s, was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital.

Coastguard said a medic assessed the woman and administered pain relief before she was picked up by the helicopter.

“It was great working with our colleagues at Westpac Rescue Helicopter and putting all of our combined training into practice to support this patient.

“We also want to thank the farmers on Ponui Island who came to offer assistance,” Coastguard said.
