A woman earlier reported missing has been found dead in “unexplained” circumstances near a Northland beach yesterday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene between Omamari Beach and Aranga Beach around 2pm on Friday after a woman’s body and her vehicle was located.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Clayton said she was reported missing earlier that day after failing to return home on Thursday night.

“The scene, including her vehicle have been cordoned off and forensic examinations are underway today.”

Clayton said her body has been transported to Auckland where a post-mortem examination will take place today.

“Her death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances leading up to her death and her body being located.”

Anyone who saw a woman wearing a green puffer jacket north of Omamari Beach between 8pm on August 1 and 10am on August 2 has been urged to contact police on 105.
