A woman has been arrested and charged with murder in relation to the death of Wellington grandmother Helen Gregory.

Helen Gregory, 79, was found dead at her Khandallah property on Baroda Street on January 24 this year, prompting a homicide investigation.

A family notice published in The Post described Gregory as a dearly loved mother, mother-in-law, and treasured grandmother.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said a 52-year-old woman was taken into custody this morning, charged with murder in relation to Gregory’s death.

“The 52-year-old is due to appear in Wellington District Court tomorrow,” Leitch said.

Last week, Leitch had said the investigation had led police to search the Porirua landfill after they believed items were discarded there by a person of interest in the hours after Gregory’s death.

They were looking for “particular items that could significantly advance the homicide investigation”, Leitch said.

A search of the Porirua landfill was completed on Saturday and Leitch confirmed a search is being undertaken at the woman’s address.

“This is a significant development in the investigation and our thoughts are with Helen’s family at this time,” he said.

Police acknowledged the response and support of the community during the investigation.

“As this matter is now before the court, we are limited in making further comment”.
