The occupant of a vehicle with stolen number plates has been arrested after he was found in the roof cavity of a busy Auckland mall this evening.

Police said the number plates were identified by officers in East Tamaki around 4.50pm on Saturday.

“The Police Eagle helicopter sighted the vehicle and kept it in view from the air, continuing to report back to police units on the ground.”

“The occupant of the vehicle was driving erratically and at speed at times, on occasionally on the wrong side of the road.”

The driver abandoned the vehicle at Botany Town Centre around 5pm and entered the mall.

“Police have entered the mall, and with the assistance of a police dog unit, located the male in a roof cavity.”

The man was arrested at around 6.20pm.

Footage supplied to 1News shows several police vehicles parked on the road through the mall and police speaking with witnesses at Farmers Botany.
