Two people have suffered serious injuries after a car crashed into a shopfront in Whangamatā this morning.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said emergency services were called to Port Rd, between Lincoln and Ocean roads, about 6.30am.

Police said they were removed from the vehicle and a witness told 1News a rescue helicopter left the scene shortly after 8am.

St John sent two helicopters and three ambulances to the scene, treating two patients and transporting two people to Waikato Hospital.

“Two patients were airlifted to Waikato Hospital. One in a critical condition and another in a serious condition,” a St John spokesperson said.
