Two people have been injured after a car collided with a southbound Northern Explorer train in Horowhenua this afternoon.

Police say emergency services were called to the scene at a level crossing on McLeavey Rd, near State Highway 1 in Ōhau, around 4.55pm.

One person is in a serious condition while another is in a minor condition, police said.

KiwiRail chief operations officer Siva Sivapakkiam said there were 72 people on board the train as it travelled southbound towards Wellington at the time of the crash.

“Police are on the scene, and once it’s possible to do so, those aboard the train will be taken on to Wellington.”
