Two people have died in separate crashes within ten minutes of each other in the Hawke’s Bay and Canterbury regions today, while two others died in hospital following separate crashes last week, police said.

The first fatal crash involved a truck and a car in the Hawke’s Bay region, with police receiving a report of the collision on State Highway 2, north of Takapau shortly after 8am.

“One person died at the scene,” a police spokesperson said.

“The road remains closed and will be for most of the day. We advise motorists to avoid the area.

“Detours are in place via State Highway 50.”

Ten minutes later, police received a report of a single-vehicle crash in Canterbury.

The crash occurred on State Highway 73 in Arthurs Pass at around 8.20am, a police spokesperson said.

“One person was located deceased at the scene.

“Motorists travelling on State Highway 73 are advised to expect delays and avoid the area if possible.”

Two fatalities announced following crashes last week.

Police also announced that two people have died in hospital following two separate crashes in Southland and Canterbury last week.

The first crash occurred on the Winton Lorneville Highway in Southland on January 21.

“Two people were transported to hospital in a critical condition following the crash,” a police spokesperson said.

“One person passed away yesterday as a result of the injuries sustained.”

The second person remains in a critical condition.

Police also confirmed a second fatality following a crash on Milford Clandeboye Rd near Temuka at around 12.40pm on January 22.

“The person was transported to hospital in a critical condition following the crash and passed away on January 24 as a result of the injuries sustained,” a spokesperson said.

Inquiries into the four above crashes were ongoing.
