Two men were arrested this morning after allegedly stealing a caravan and continuing to tow it, even after it tipped on its side and hit parked vehicles.

The driver also allegedly drove at at officer who was laying spikes – they were unharmed.

Police said it was notified at 5am about the caravan being stolen from outside a Khandallah property.

Police then located the vehicle and lay road spikes – but the driver avoided them and allegedly drove at the officer who laid them.

“Fortunately the officer was not harmed,” police said.

The vehicle then travelled south through Northland and down into Aro Valley. Police said a brief pursuit was initiated before it was abandoned.

It said due to the manner of the driving, the vehicle “tipped on its side at one point”, but the driver did not stop.

“The caravan hit a number of objects, including parked vehicles, throughout the incident, and broke into pieces, with parts and items from within being scattered across the road.”

It then entered the motorway at Terrace Tunnel, exited at Tinakori Road and then crashed near Grant Road.

The pair then fled on foot, but were taken into custody “with the assistance of a dog handler” at 5.30am.

“A 25-year-old and a 31-year-old man have been arrested and charged with various offences relating to the theft and driving matters. They are due in Wellington District Court today.”

Police asked anyone who is a victim to damage of either cars or property to report it and get in touch.

It said the matters can be reported by phoning 105 or online.
