Sure, the Super Bowl has always been a big deal. But this year’s game got a major boost courtesy of Taylor Swift and her army of Swifties. Anna Murray reports on the real action from Super Bowl LVIII.

Two teams – the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, I think – played at the Super Bowl today.

And while there was plenty of action on the field, most notably a halftime show featuring Usher on rollerskates, Alicia Keys, Lil Jon and Ludacris, there was plenty of interest off the field too, as Taylor Swift joined the crowds to cheer on her boyfriend, Chiefs player Travis Kelce.

Thanks to the International Date Line and a private jet that was almost certainly tracked by this Florida-based student, Swift easily made it to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas just one day after performing in Tokyo.

It meant there were plenty of opportunities for coverage of the game to cut to Swift and her celebrity entourage in their swanky suite. Here are the answers to all the questions you have about the occasion.

What did she wear?

I’m so glad you asked.

Swift chose to wear black for the game with accessories that honoured Kelce and his Chiefs team.

She wore a black tank top and black, rhinestone-embellished, straight-leg jeans by AREA that have probably now sold out despite their $US695 ($1130) price tag.

With her hair up in a ponytail, Swift accessorised with a custom diamond necklace featuring the number 87 – Kelce’s jersey number. The same 87 appeared on Swift’s football-shaped purse, which the internet tells me is by Judith Leiber and comes with a $US4500 ($7320) price tag.

And, of course, she finished the look with bright red lipstick to match the bright red Chiefs bomber jacket she had slung over one shoulder.

Who did she sit with?

The Super Bowl proved to be a real family occasion for Swift and Kelce, with both of their families sitting together in the same suite at Allegiant Stadium.

Swift was also joined by a couple of her celebrity pals, namely actor Blake Lively and rapper Ice Spice, who Swift collaborated with on the song Karma.

Lana Del Ray, who Swift dragged on to the stage at the Grammy Awards last week, initially had to settle for stretching up to say hello to Swift from the cheap seats (which are not all that cheap given the average price for a ticket to this year’s Super Bowl was sitting at $US8600). But she was later spotted in the suite next to Swift, as was …Sir Paul McCartney?

What merch was there to mark this auspicious occasion?

Swift’s fans have been buying up Chiefs merchandise ever since the pop star was first seen at one of his games, but the Super Bowl has brought a whole new merch frenzy.

There were mugs, candles, jewellery, shirts and posters ahoy, but my personal favourite was an ignitable cake that started with a Kansas City Chiefs logo on the top that burned away to reveal an image of Swift underneath.

The cake’s creator, Maddie Schmitz, told the Associated Press she had lots of women buying the cake to surprise their husbands with at their Super Bowl parties.

Which presidential candidate did Swift endorse at the game?

Conspiracy theorists have had a very normal reaction to Swift’s Super Bowl appearance, claiming the singer’s relationship with Kelce was all part of a “psyop” concocted by the Democratic Party ahead of the US election.

Far-right commentators (and even a former Republican presidential candidate) said the Super Bowl was rigged so “Pentagon asset” Swift and Kelce could manipulate voters and endorse Joe Biden for re-election.

But there were no political endorsements as far as I could tell. Just Swift cuddling her buddy Blake Lively while Post Malone sang America The Beautiful during the pre-game entertainment.

Anything else we should know?

Not really. Although she did chug her drink while shown on the jumbotron at the stadium.

Where’s she off to now?

Swift will soon be getting back on her beloved private jet and heading to Australia for the next leg of her Eras world tour, which kicks off in Melbourne this Friday.

Oh, and who actually won the Super Bowl?

Couldn’t tell you! But you can watch how it all unfolded over on TVNZ+.
