A New Plymouth man was lost for words after finding out he’d won $23.3 million with Lotto Powerball after popping into the supermarket over the weekend.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, had picked up a Power Dip while doing his grocery shop at Woolworths Spotswood ahead of Saturday’s draw.

He then went back to the supermarket on Sunday afternoon to “grab a few things” with his sister.

“As we walked in, she said, ‘Hey did you know someone won $23 million here last night’, so I fished around in my wallet and thought I’d better check my ticket while I was there,” he said.

The man then handed the ticket to the Lotto operator, who checked it through the machine.

“I couldn’t work it out for a second — she had a stunned look on her face and couldn’t talk, she just tapped the screen.

“I looked and it said, ‘Division One winner’ — I was absolutely lost for words!” he said.

The man then went home to try and digest the news after filling in the paperwork.

“It took a lot of time try to get my head around things, it felt so surreal — it still feels surreal.”

The man said he’d like to help his family in the future — once’s he’s finished processing the news.
