Parts of the Auckland CBD were without power this evening after an “internal cable fault” triggered a smoke alarm at an electrical substation on Hobson St.
Power went out to several areas around the CBD, centred on Nelson, Halsey, Wellesley and Custom streets around 5.15pm.
Fire and Emergency NZ said sprinklers in a high voltage switch room at the Hobson St substation were triggered at around 5.09pm on Saturday.
Six fire trucks, two ladder trucks and one specialist command vehicle was present at the peak of the event, a spokesperson said.
In a statement this evening, a Vector spokesperson told 1News an “internal cable fault” at the Hobson St substation triggered a smoke alarm, “despatching emergency services and Vector crews automatically”.
“Once the site was checked and cleared by Fire and Emergency, our crew was able to enter, isolate the fault and restore power. Our crews will remain onsite with Fire and Emergency while the alarm is reset.”
The fire was extinguished around 6pm.
Disruptions to power supply caused the 1News at 6pm bulletin to go off-air for about 3 seconds at around 6.35pm.
The Vector outage site showed limited power outages in locations across the CBD but has since been resolved.
