Popular Kiwi band Six60 have announced they’ll be performing at Auckland’s Eden Park next weekend as New Zealand attempts to reclaim the Guinness World Record for the largest haka.

Organisers hope around 10,000 participants will take part in the mammoth effort to perform Ka Mate by Ngāti Toa Rangatira chief Te Rauparaha on September 29.

The record is currently held by France after 4028 men and women performed a haka in 2014.

An attempt of returning the haka world record to Aotearoa was performed in Rotorua in 2017 but was not officiated by Guinness World Records.

Now, music legend Dame Hinewehi Mohi is determined to bring the record home — with the aid of the award-winning band.

“Having one of New Zealand’s most successful bands join our line up is a dream come true,” Mohi said.

“We hope that having Six60 making the commitment to be there excites people even more to get their ticket and join us.”

The band will be joined by other New Zealand greats, including Anika Moa, Kings, Tami Neilson, Alien Weaponry, and the Topp Twins.

Ten thousand participant tickets are eligible via the Haka Record website, where spectators and participants are able to buy tickets, and watch videos to teach tāne (men) and wāhine (women) how to perform the Ka Mate haka authentically.
