Simple Minds set was cut short this evening as wild weather struck a Hamilton music festival.

The Summer Concert Tour at Claudelands Oval was shut down over lightning concerns after a storm moved into the area.

The event promoter Greenstone told 1News the show was ended “5-10 minutes early” due to safety concerns.

Simple Minds had just belted out their classic track Don’t You Forget About Me before the set was abruptly called to a halt.

A concertgoer told the NZ Herald the show was stopped while Simple Minds were performing their hit song Alive and Kicking towards the end of the show.

A security guard reportedly came onstage to stop the concert during the song, with an announcement being made that attendees would have to leave the venue due to the bad weather.

The attendee said the crowd left in an orderly fashion.

Pseudo Echo, Collective Soul and Texas had already played at the festival during the day. Simple Minds was the final act, with the show being scheduled to finish at 6.30pm.

It comes as heavy orange rain warnings are in place for parts of the central North Island this evening into tomorrow morning.

RNZ reported there have already been slips reported in Taranaki.
