State Highway 6 through the Upper Buller Gorge has reopened to a single lane as clean-up continues over a “significant slip”, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says.
The highway, which is a main route to Westport, was closed overnight and this morning between the intersection with State Highway 65 and Inangahua at the State Highway 69 intersection.
It reopened to one lane from 6pm this evening with traffic management in place, NZTA West Coast maintenance contract manager Moira Whinham said.
The transport agency said motorists should expect a slower journey through the Upper Buller Gorge while the single lane is in place past the slip site.
“Please drive to the conditions as the surface may be slippery with silty material on the road surface. Further clearance work will happen over the coming week so people coming in and out of Westport should expect delays.”
MetService issued a raft of severe weather warnings and watches on Saturday and NZTA said weather was affecting all state highways across the top of the South Island.
