A search operation involving multiple agencies is underway in Hawke’s Bay after a crew member on a fishing vessel was reported to have fallen overboard last night.

Maritime New Zealand told 1News it was alerted to reports of a crew member overboard from a fishing vessel off the coast of Hawke’s Bay around 8pm on April 1.

“The search is being assisted by rescue helicopter services from Auckland, Gisborne and Hastings, Napier coast guard and other vessels in the area,” a spokesperson said.

Police said the person was missing approximately 11km offshore from Waimarama.

A spokesperson said the search was being led by RCCNZ.

RNZ reports a Royal New Zealand Air Force NH90 helicopter was also assisting with the search.

Hawke’s Bay deputy harbour master Adrian Wright told RNZ it was unclear how the man fell overboard or whether he was wearing a life jacket at the time.

“The sea conditions [at the time] weren’t actually that bad. It was just one of those situations where something really unfortunate happened,” Wright said.
