A shopper was left “pretty scared” after a knife was brandished during a “disorder incident” involving youths at a busy central Auckland mall this afternoon.

The witness, who asked to remain anonymous, told 1News she was shopping at Westfield Newmarket with her partner when they noticed a group of teenagers “being rowdy”.

The group of around seven or eight people was seen running toward the food court area.

She said three security guards were trying to diffuse the situation.

“They were quite outnumbered and it was quite chaotic.”

One person was holding a “medium-sized” knife in his hand as he walked past her towards the group of fighting kids, she said.

“I was scared because that kid was barefoot and just walking around with a knife in his hand.

“People like that seem very unstable, you never know what’s gonna happen and what goes through his head. We left after that.”

Police said officers attended a disorder incident involving a group of youths during which a knife was presented at around 2.25pm today.

“Police spoke with the youths and seized the knife,” a spokesperson said.

“Police are continuing to make inquiries into the matter.”

Westfield Newmarket contains 258 shops and is the country’s second largest shopping centre.
