A popular range of coleslaw and ready-to-eat salad products has been urgently recalled from supermarkets across New Zealand due to the possible presence of metal filings.
The affected Speirs Foods brand salads and Woolworths brand coleslaw were sold at Fresh Choice, New World, PAK’nSAVE and Woolworths supermarkets through NZ.
The recall includes Woolworths brand Classic Coleslaw, sold in 250g and 450g plastic containers with use-by dates of September 5 and September 6, 2025, as well as a range of ready-to-eat salads sold in various weights from deli counters between August 27 and August 29.
New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said the concern with metal filings was that they could cause injury.
“If you have any affected products don’t eat them. You can return it to the place of purchase for a refund. If that’s not possible, throw it out.”
NZFS said it had not received any reports of associated injury.
“As is our usual practice, NZFS will work with Spiers Foods to understand how this happened and prevent its recurrence.”
Retailers had been instructed to display point-of-sale notices for one month to inform customers of the recall.
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled items are advised not to consume them.
Anyone who had eaten the products and was experiencing health concerns should seek medical advice.
