A “serious” single-vehicle crash on State Highway 69 this morning has seen the holiday death toll rise to 11.

Police have confirmed a person died after the crash in Inangahua, in the South Island.

Police said it was notified of the crash at 12.43am this morning.

The road will remain closed for some time this morning, and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Another person has died after a single-vehicle crash near Russell in Northland.

The crash happened on Russell Whakapara Rd at around 11.40am this morning.

One person died at the scene and the second person is in a serious condition.

Russell Whakapara Rd is now closed between Waikare and De Nora Rds.

“Due to the remote location of the crash, Police are advising motorists to avoid the area if at all possible,” police said.

“Police ask for motorists’ understanding while our work is carried out at the scene as part of the investigation into what has occurred.”

A third crash has occurred in Waitomo, closing State Highway 3.

Police confirmed the incident in Piopio was reported shortly after 12.30pm and multiple vehicles were involved.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible and to expect delays, with dversions are in place from Aria Road through to Totara Road.

The serious crash unit has been advised of both incidents and will examine the scenes.
