A rāhui has been placed near Eastbourne, Lower Hutt, after the body of Terrence Jameson was recovered from the water on Monday.
Public appeals for information on the 74-year-old’s disappearance were made on Sunday after he was last seen on Friday. Police have said Jameson’s death remains “unexplained”.
Last night, Te Āti Awa representative Kura Moeahu, chairman of Waiwhetū Marae and Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa, performed karakia where Jameson was located the day before at Point Arthur.
Police said the rāhui has been laid down, taking effect immediately from Lion’s Rock heading out to Mākaro, also known as Ward Island. It then moves diagonally south towards the point closest to Lake Kōhangapiripiri.
“Out of respect for Mr Jameson’s whānau, Te Āti Awa iwi asks that kaimoana not be taken and recreational activities not take place in this area until the rāhui is lifted on Saturday, November 2 at 7am,” police said.
Yesterday, police said they are continuing to make inquiries surrounding the incident.
“Terrence was last seen on a track behind Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt on Friday, October 25, and police are asking anyone who may have seen Terrence that day to come forward.
“He had his electric one-wheel scooter with him, however could have been carrying it, which would give the appearance of him carrying a black box.
“Terrence may also have been wearing, or carrying, distinctive red basketball boots.”
