Police are continuing to appeal for information into the death of a 43-year-old man near Raglan, who is believed to have been struck by a car while walking his dog.

Steven Cranston, 43, was discovered dead on State Highway 23, near Nau Mai Rd, on Wednesday night last week. Cranston has not been formally named by police.

Late this afternoon, Detective Senior Sergeant Kristine Clarke gave an update on the investigation into Cranston’s death.

“We would like to thank those people who have already contacted police with information, as a result of an earlier appeal,” she said in a media release.

“Police inquiries to establish the exact circumstances of the man’s death are ongoing.”

A resident said Cranston had been seen walking his dog in the middle of the state highway and other roads around the coastal town in an unusual and out-of-character manner, RNZ reported yesterday.

On September 4, emergency services were called to the scene of the crash shortly before 7pm, near the intersection of SH23 and Nga Mai Rd, east of Raglan.

At the time, police appealed for sightings of vehicles of interest.

Investigators want to talk to anyone who might have witnessed the incident or seen Cranston walking his dog between 4.30pm and 7pm on the day.

Cranston was a member of Groundswell and a one-time candidate for DemocracyNZ in Waikato. He was described as quiet and shy by a friend, according to RNZ.
