Prince Harry joked about US President Donald Trump in a surprise appearance on a late-night US TV show.
The Duke of Sussex joined The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, who was discussing made-for-TV Christmas movies – loved by some and derided by others.
Colbert was discussing a specific trope of the genre, where a foreign royal ends up in a small US town and falls in love.
He stated it would be unrealistic to just run into a prince. Harry then appeared behind him to raucous applause. He said he was there to audition for “The Gingerbread Christmas Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska”.
When asked why he was “auditioning”, Harry said: “You Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies, and you’re clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?”
Colbert replied with: “I wouldn’t say we’re obsessed with royalty.”
Harry replied, in an apparent jibe at Trump: “Really? I heard you elected a king.
“And after making such a big deal about my great great great great great great grandfather George III.”
George was King during the Revolutionary War, during which the US gained its independence.
He then asked what he had to do to get into a Christmas movie. Colbert asked Harry if he knew any famous TV actresses – a reference to Harry’s wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.
He said he would do anything to end up in a Christmas movie, including “settle a baseless lawsuit with the White House – all the things you people in TV do” – a reference to Colbert’s network CBS paying Trump.
“Hey, Harry, I didn’t do any of those things,” Colbert said.
Harry replied: “Maybe that’s why you’re cancelled.”
The sketch ended with the two in an embrace.
