Police have issued a strong warning to young people after a video that appeared to show a young person at the top of a crane in the Auckland CBD was shared on social media.

The person, who claimed to be aged 16, filmed themselves while on a crane boom 220m above the ground.

The social media post claimed they had climbed to the top of a crane at the Seascape site, a stalled development planned to be Auckland’s tallest apartment building.

According to the NZ Herald, work on the building stopped in August last year due to a feud between its’ builder, China Construction, and its developer, Shundi.

The person who posted the video claimed to have climbed the crane 27 times.

“I was the first person to successfully climb the jib of this crane, proving that anything is possible if you put in enough effort,” the video’s caption read.

The TikTok user had previously posted videos of themselves climbing other cranes in the city.

A police spokesperson said they were “not immediately aware” of when the climb occurred but offered a stark warning to other young people who might consider doing it too.

“It’s really important our young people think [before] participating in this sort of action. It puts them at risk of serious or fatal consequences.”

Police said there had been other instances in recent years across the Auckland CBD where people had been found unlawfully inside buildings or building sites.

“Those people have faced enforcement action as a result.”
