A police negotiation team has resolved an incident in Blenheim where a man was believed to be holding a baby hostage.

Police were called to the house in Park Terrace just after 5pm on Friday, Marlborough Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham, said after a man arrived with a gun.

Feltham said it was a “family harm-related incident”.

Two people were originally in the house and one was able to get to safety, he said, but the other person — a baby — remained inside with the man.

No one was injured, Feltham said, and police were focused on the welfare of the people inside.

Just after 5pm on Saturday, police said a 44-year-old man was taken into custody.

“The man was arrested at around 4.35pm, and a baby that was inside the house with the man has been recovered safely and is uninjured.”

Neighbours were asked to stay in temporary accommodation on Friday night.

There was no risk to the wider community, police said.

A section of Park Terrace was cordoned off and the public were asked to avoid the area while police dealt with the incident.
