Police are investigating a spate of “suspicious” car fires throughout central Auckland over the past week, including two vehicles set alight in Grafton last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend said the latest event involved two vehicles that were set alight in a car park on Park Rd, Grafton about 9.15pm on Friday.

“One vehicle suffered minor damage, while the other [was] badly damaged,” he said.

Friend said the most recent incident followed three other arson events in the city.

“One [at] about 9pm on Wednesday, another about 9.55pm on Thursday, and another involving two cars on Stanley Street – close to the Auckland Domain – about 4.55pm yesterday.

“The vehicles suffered varying degrees of damage.”

He said the fires had caused “a lot of needless disruption to the lives of the victims, and they’re understandably annoyed at what has happened”.

“We’re also concerned that these fires could have put people’s lives at risk,” Friend said.

Police urged anyone in the area around those times who saw suspicious behaviour “especially around parked cars,” to contact them on 105 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand referred to police for all information.
