Three people have been arrested and a firearm, methamphetamine and cannabis have been seized after a driver reversed into a police car and attempted to steal a member of the public’s vehicle while fleeing police in Lower Hutt this morning.

Senior Sergeant Kylee Cusin said police responded following reports of three people in a suspicious vehicle parked near a commercial address on Howard Rd around 8.40am on Monday.

The vehicle left that location prior to police arrival, but was seen near the intersection of Marine Dr and Howard Rd where police signalled for the vehicle to stop.

“The vehicle did so, but as police approached to speak with the driver, the driver continued,” said Cusin.

Police spiked the vehicle in Gracefield and the driver pulled over and stopped briefly when signalled to stop before reversing into a police vehicle and fleeing from police.

Cusin said the vehicle was not pursued due to the driver’s behaviour.

“The occupants abandoned their vehicle nearby and attempted to steal a member of the public’s vehicle on Gracefield Rd.

“They were not successful and the member of the public was not injured.”

All three were taken into custody with the assistance of the police dog unit.

Cusin said police would like to thank the member of the public who saw and reported the suspicious activity which allowed the quick identification and response.

The trio, aged between 22 and 43, were due to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court tomorrow.
