One person is in critical condition and another in moderate condition following the collision between a car and a passenger train yesterday afternoon.
KiwiRail chief operations officer Siva Sivapakkiam said there were 72 people on board the train, the southbound Northern Explorer, shortly after the incident.
Today, Hato Hone St John confirmed the injuries.
“Two ambulances, two rapid response, two operations managers and one helicopter attended the scene.
“Our crews assessed and treated two patients, one in a critical condition who was airlifted to Wellington hospital, and one in a moderate condition was treated at the scene.”
Yesterday, police said the when it was possible to do so, those aboard the train would be taken on to Wellington.
The Northern Explorer train travels between Auckland and Wellington.
