Two people have been arrested after damaging a police car, allegedly stealing another vehicle and then crashing in Wellington this morning.

Inspector Steven Braybrook said officers spotted a vehicle of interest in a carpark on Athol Crescent in Wellington’s CBD around 9am this morning.

Police approached the vehicle on foot, when the pair re-entered their vehicle and reversed into the police patrol car.

“Thankfully, the officers were not injured, however, the patrol car has sustained considerable damage,” a police spokesperson said.

The vehicle then drove into the Hutt Valley area, where it was spiked heading south from Upper Hutt towards the Haywards.

“Due to the manner of driving, a pursuit was not initiated by police,” Braybrook said.

The vehicle was tracked onto Flightys Road, where the occupants left the first vehicle and allegedly stole another vehicle, which belonged to a member of the public, and drove north on Transmission Gully.

Braybrook said the member of the public was uninjured and was receiving support from police.

The stolen vehicle was spiked by police near the Paekākāriki State Highway 59 intersection with Transmission Gully and the vehicle crashed into the centre barrier.

A man, 40, and woman, 43, were uninjured and arrested at the scene.

“A large amount of police property and private property were damaged during this incident,” Braybrook said.

“Police are investigating the incident and serious charges are being considered.”
