A homicide investigation has been launched after one person was killed and three others were injured following a fight between two groups in central Hamilton overnight.
Police were called to an altercation reportedly involving two groups on Alexandra St at about 12.10am.
Detective Sergeant Reece Durston said four people were injured at the scene.
“Sadly, a 20-year-old man died in hospital a short time later.”
Durston said a homicide investigation had been launched and that some of those involved, including an alleged offender, left the scene immediately.
“The investigation team is moving at speed to locate them and the implements involved.”

He described the incident as a “senseless act of violence”.
“The investigation team is working hard to understand how and why this happened, and we are wrapping support around the family of the deceased, and the other victims.”
Alexandra St is cordoned between Collingwood and Hood streets and was expected to remain closed through the day.
Durston said there was a “large scene” for police to work through.
“We ask that the public avoid the area and thank them for their understanding.”
The cordon included a car park, and anyone with a vehicle parked there was asked to make a report online or by calling 105.
