One person has died after a milk tanker collided with a car on State Highway 1 before going on to crash into a house last night.

Emergency services were called to the section of road in Edendale, near Invercargill, at around 10.20pm.

Police said the truck collided with a house after going off the road.

“One person was located deceased at the scene, the truck driver received minor injuries and there were no injuries sustained by the occupants of the house.”

Fire and Emergency NZ said three crews from Edendale, Kingswell and Gore assisted.

“Everyone from the house is okay,” a spokesperson said.

St John confirmed it had attended the scene.

SH1 was down to one lane between Downs Rd South and Homestead Rd.

“Diversions are being put in place, but there may be delays for heavy vehicles.”

According to the latest update on NZTA Waka Kotahi’s website, the road was closed to northbound traffic between Dacre and Mataura.

“Road users are advised to avoid the area if possible and allow extra time to travel through the detour route.”

The serious crash unit and commercial vehicle safety team were notified following the crash,
