One person is dead and a key stretch of road in the Coromandel is closed after a “serious” single-vehicle crash early this morning.
The Thames Coast Rd south of Kereta will be closed for “several hours”, police said earlier.
“Emergency services were alerted about 3.25am, after a car reportedly hit a power pole and crashed into the water near Russek Rd,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.
“There are no detours available, anyone needing to travel to or from Coromandel will need to go via Whitianga.
“The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.”
In a later update, the death was confirmed.
“Sadly one person died at the scene,” a spokesperson said.
“Police would like any witnesses of the crash, or driving prior to the crash, or anyone with dash camera footage to come forward and assist the ongoing investigation.”
Anyone with information is asked to call 105.
Confirmation of the death brings the holiday road toll to 17.
