Auckland has managed to hang on to its top-10 position in the 2024 ranking of the world’s most liveable cities.

The City of Sails shares its ninth-placed equal ranking with Osaka, Japan, up one place from tenth equal last year.

Our capital city Wellington moved up three spots, coming in at 20th place.

Both cities had recently been ranked highly by the annual index by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Auckland was ranked the world’s most liveable city and Wellington was ranked fourth in the 2021 index.

New Zealand’s Covid-19 response proved popular with survey respondents in 2021, before Omicron restrictions in 2022 caused the steep declines in last year’s rankings.

Across the ditch, some of Australia’s top-ranking cities dropped down the list due to “significant” shortfall in housing availability.

Melbourne dropped one spot to fourth place, while Sydney dropped three places into seventh position.

Christopher Luxon is expected to travel to Sydney to meet with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Wednesday.

The index rates 173 cities worldwide on factors such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

Vienna, Austria retained its position as the world’s most liveable city for the third year running, while Damascus, Syria remained at the bottom of the ranking.

Tel Aviv fell the most in the rankings due to ongoing Israeli military action against Palestinians.

Data was collected over five weeks in February and March.
