Around 1300 people will attend a private funeral service for Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming in Nelson today after she was killed in the line of duty on New Year’s Day.

The service will include full police honours with Fleming’s casket arriving via police motorcade and with dignitaries such as Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Police Commissioner Richard Chambers in attendance.

Police staff from around the country have been bought in so that around 200 from the Tasman region who worked with Fleming will be able to attend the funeral.

The service will be held at Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre at 1pm and following the service police will give her family a flag, perform a haka and form a guard of honour.

While it is closed to the public, it will be live streamed on the police website and for those in Nelson, they will be able to watch it at the Nelson Cathedral.

Fleming and colleague Adam Ramsay were on foot patrol in Nelson’s Buxton’s Square around 2am on New Year’s Day when they were struck by a vehicle. Fleming died later that day in Nelson Hospital.

As well as a dedicated police officer, Fleming has been remembered as a loved mother, wife, daughter and sister. She was heavily involved in Nelson netball.

Fleming is the 34th officer to die in the line of duty in New Zealand. She is also the first female officer and only officer from the Nelson region to be killed.

A 32-year-old man is facing a number of charges including murder and attempted murder.
