Police are investigating the death of a prisoner who was found in his cell at Mt Eden Corrections Facility with “numerous injuries”.

Police detective inspector Glenn Baldwin said the inmate was located deceased in his cell just before 10am.

Corrections said the man had been in a double-bunked cell – the other prisoner who had been residing in the cell is now in a single cell.

Police have launched a homicide investigation.

“What I can say at this stage is that the man has been found with numerous injuries,” Baldwin said.

“Our investigation is still in its infancy and a post-mortem examination will likely take place tomorrow.”

Police are speaking with a man in connection with the death.

“There is still a lot of work for investigators, and we will be working with Corrections as part of the investigation into what has led to the man’s death.”

The family of the deceased has been informed.

Corrections said it will also carry out an investigation and provide all evidence it gathers to police.

Corrections noted all deaths in custody are referred to the Coroner for investigation and determination of cause of death.

“An investigation by the independent Corrections Inspectorate will also be carried out,” deputy commissioner for men’s prisons David Pattinson said.
