A man who died on Tuesday after being found critically injured on a roadside in Wellington’s Miramar has today been formally named by police.

He was 63-year-old Abdul Nabizadah, originally from Afghanistan, Detective Inspector Nick Pritchard said.

Nabizadah was found with serious head injuries at the intersection of Camperdown Rd and Darlington Rd around 2.20am on Monday, March 17.

He was found near his vehicle by police carrying out inquiries following a serious burglary that happened a short distance away about 20 minutes earlier. Nabizadah died in hospital the following day.

A post-mortem was completed on March 19 and found the cause of death was a result of blunt force head injuries.

Nabizadah “was not involved in the burglary, and we are still trying to establish how he was injured”, Pritchard said.

He was released to his family yesterday and laid to rest yesterday afternoon.

Nabizadah was wearing a brown jacket with a blue t-shirt underneath, black trousers, and light brown coloured shoes at the time of the incident.

He was found near his vehicle, a silver Toyota Aqua, with the registration NQE681.

Anyone who was in the Nevay Rd, Camperdown Rd, and Darlington Rd area between 12.20am and 3am on the same morning and saw a person fitting his description was asked to get in touch with police.

Anyone motorists who were driving in the Miramar suburb between midnight and 3am on March 17 and had dashcam footage of their trip was also asked to contact police.

Police were reviewing CCTV footage as they inquired into his movements, including trying to ascertain whether his death was linked in some way to the burglary.

Parallel investigations

Meanwhile, a parallel police investigation is underway into the burglary of a home near where Nabizadah was found injured.

Pritchard said a man entered a Darlington Rd home before being confronted by one of the occupants.

Police are continuing their investigation to find the person believed to be responsible for the burglary.

Anyone who has had items go missing on Darlington Rd, Totara Rd, and Camperdown Rd – particularly in the block north of Camperdown Rd – has been asked to call police.

Residents who discover discarded items of property on their sections or has seen but not reported any suspicious activity or prowling in the area in recent weeks – including thefts from properties or vehicles – has been asked to get in touch.
