Police are appealing for the public’s help after a man attempting to break up an “altercation” in Māhia on New Year’s Day was knocked unconscious.

The 34-year-old suffered a concussion and facial injuries after being knocked unconscious while trying to break up an “altercation” between an unknown group in a hotel car park on Newcastle St at about 12.40am.

The man was hospitalised following the attack but has since been discharged.

“This should have been a night of celebration and sadly hasn’t turned out that way,” police said.

Investigators said the fight involved between 20 to 30 people and was “likely witnessed by a number of people”.

“Detectives from Wairoa and Gisborne are investigating and need to hear from anyone with information or footage.” This can be provided to the police by calling 105.
